AI Readiness Assessment

AI readiness assessment

Find out what your organisation needs to adopt AI safely and effectively — across data, systems, security, governance and skills — before you invest in build.

What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment reviews whether an organisation's data, systems, security, governance and people are ready to support specific AI use cases. It identifies gaps — such as poor data quality, over-shared files, missing integrations or no AI policy — and produces a prioritised plan of what to fix before, and during, AI adoption.

Readiness for a use case, not readiness in the abstract

Generic AI maturity scores rarely help anyone decide what to do next. We assess readiness against the use cases you actually care about: what data they need, which systems they must connect to, who should be able to see what, and what has to change in the process.

One of the most common findings is over-sharing. AI assistants surface whatever a user can access — so files shared too widely in SharePoint, OneDrive or Google Drive become visible in AI answers. Fixing permissions before rollout is often the single most important readiness task. Our checklist article covers what we look at.

What we assess

Data

Quality, location, ownership, structure and whether the data needed for each use case actually exists.

Access and permissions

Who can see what — especially file shares and collaboration platforms AI assistants will search.

Systems and integration

Which systems hold the information and how they can be connected safely.

Security and privacy

POPIA obligations, data classification, logging and where information is processed.

Governance

Policies, approval routes, accountability and how AI risks are managed.

Skills and change

Leadership sponsorship, user readiness, training needs and operational ownership.

The assessment process

  1. 01

    Agree the use cases

Confirm the AI opportunities in scope and what success would look like.

  2. 02

    Review the environment

Workshops, configuration review and sampling of data and permissions.

  3. 03

    Score and prioritise gaps

Rate each gap by impact on the use cases and effort to fix.

  4. 04

    Deliver the readiness plan

A prioritised action list, quick wins and the path into a first pilot.

Connected capabilities

Where this connects to the rest of the work

Technology does not operate in silos. These are the capabilities that most often sit alongside this one in a real engagement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does an AI readiness assessment take?

It depends on scope. A focused assessment for one or two use cases in a single environment is a short engagement; enterprise assessments across many systems take longer. We agree the scope up front.

Do we need a readiness assessment before Microsoft 365 Copilot?

It is strongly advisable. Copilot can surface any content a user has access to, so reviewing permissions, sharing and sensitivity labelling first prevents information reaching the wrong people.

What do we receive at the end?

A clear readiness position for each use case, a prioritised list of gaps with recommended actions and effort, quick wins, and a recommended first pilot.

Can you fix the gaps you find?

Yes. Because we also deliver managed IT, cybersecurity, cloud and software work, the readiness plan can move straight into delivery.
